Hurricane Idalia Operations update

01 September 2023 - Update 03

Idalia was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone on Thursday afternoon as it traveled out over the Atlantic Ocean in the direction of Bermuda. The storm resulted in significant flooding and power outages. However, Maersk landside facilities weathered the storm well and will be conducting operations as normal on Friday.

Ports and terminals have updated their status conditions as presented below. Storm-related delays in combination with upcoming Labor Day holiday closures may have resulted in additional wait times. Check the Maersk vessel schedules for the latest information. Please find our ocean operations update below:

31 August 2023 - Update 02

Hurricane Idalia made landfall this morning in Florida and will move across southeastern Georgia as a Category 1 storm through this evening. The National Weather Service forecasts that Idalia will continue to weaken and track near the coast of South Carolina tonight and just offshore the coast of southern North Carolina on Thursday. Storm track models forecast the storm passing just west of Savannah and Charleston, before moving east into the Atlantic near Myrtle Beach. Idalia is then expected to move east out over the Atlantic on Friday.

Terminals have taken precautions and have updated their status conditions as presented below. Vessel voyages and lineup for nearest ports have been impacted. We will monitor berth prospects and update Maersk vessel schedules with the latest information as it becomes available.

Our business resilience teams have been working to secure approximately 30 Maersk facilities that have experienced some impact from Idalia. At this time, we have not experienced any major disruptions to our facility operations as a result of the storm.

Port Conditions Explainer

WHISKEY: A heightened condition in which gale force winds are possible within 72 hours. All commercial vessels and barges greater than 500 gross tons and all oceangoing barges and their supporting tugs shall report to the Coast Guard Captain of the Port their intention to depart or remain in port. They shall also complete an application and submit it in writing within 24 hours to the Coast Guard COTP to remain in port.

X-RAY A readiness condition in which gale force winds are possible within 48 hours. Vessels more than 500 gross tons and oceangoing barges and their supporting tugs should make preparations to leave the port or have received permission from the Coast Guard COTP to remain in port.

YANKEE A warning condition in which gale force winds are possible within 24 hours. During Port Condition YANKEE all affected ports are under vessel traffic control measures. All vessels greater than 500 gross tons and oceangoing barges and their supporting tugs with permission to remain in port should make their final mooring arrangements.

ZULU: A danger condition in which gale force winds are possible within 12 hours. In Port Condition ZULU the port is closed and all port operations are suspended except for vessel movements and activities specifically authorized by the U.S.C.G.

30 August 2023 - Update 01

According to the National Weather Service, the center of Hurricane Idalia is forecast to move over the eastern Gulf of Mexico today, reach the gulf coast of Florida on Wednesday, and move close to the Carolina coastline on Thursday. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 80 mph with higher bursts. Rapid intensification is likely and Idalia is forecast to become a major hurricane before landfall on Wednesday as a potential Category 3 storm with sustained winds of between 111-129 mph.

Areas of flash flooding are expected across portions of the west coast of Florida, the Florida Panhandle, and southern Georgia Tuesday into Wednesday, spreading into portions of the eastern Carolinas Wednesday into Thursday. A storm surge could reach as high as 12 feet in some areas and is the primary threat with this storm. Some areas could see up to 10 inches of rainfall.

Terminals are taking precautions and updating their status conditions as presented below. Vessel voyages and lineup for nearest ports will be impacted. We will continue to provide updates as we receive them from U.S.C.G. and terminals nearby. We will monitor berth prospects and update Maersk vessel schedules with the latest information as it becomes available.

These locations include offices, warehouses, stations, and air freight facilities from South Florida through the Carolinas. We have been implementing business continuity plans for storm operations. At this time, we do not have any major disruptions to our facility operations to report as a result of the storm.
