To support the use of tracking devices and data loggers inside containers, we would like to clarify the requirements applicable during sea transport.

Following a review and in alignment with the latest IMDG Code, the following rules and conditions apply to GPS or tracking devices placed inside containers during carriage:

Requirements for Tracking Devices and Data Loggers

Tracking devices and data loggers may be placed inside containers provided that each device has a maximum energy capacity of less than 100 Wh and that no more than 35 devices per container are used.

Devices must be fully compliant with the following standards:

  • IEC 60079 – equipment for use in explosive atmospheres
  • IEC 60529 – degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP rating)

Customers remain responsible for ensuring that any tracking device or data logger placed inside a container meets the above requirements and comply with all applicable regulations prior to shipment.
