Used Lithium Battery Bookings

In response to recent fire incidents involving used lithium batteries, Maersk is strengthening its cargo acceptance policy for ocean transportation of used batteries intended for secondhand markets. This advisory outline the updated requirements that apply to all affected bookings.

Definition of Used Lithium Batteries

In the absence of an industry-wide standard, Maersk defines a used lithium battery as any lithium battery that has not come directly from a production facility. This definition applies regardless of the battery's intended end use.

Commodity Code Requirement

All bookings involving lithium batteries intended for secondhand use, maintenance, disposal, or recycling must be submitted using the designated commodity code:

• Commodity Code: 002808
• Commodity Name: Used batteries or batteries for disposal or recycling

Correct identification of the commodity code at the booking stage is mandatory.

packaging requirements

General Requirements

• Packaging must conform to Packing Group II performance standards.
• Cells or batteries with a net mass exceeding 30 kg are limited to one unit per outer packaging.
• Jerricans and bags are not permitted.

Permitted Outer Packaging Types

• Drums: 1A2, 1B2, 1N2, 1D, 1H2
• Boxes: 4A, 4B, 4N, 4D, 4H2
• Rigid outer packaging

Documentation Required at Booking

The following information and supporting documentation must be provided when placing a booking for used lithium battery shipments:

1. Intended end use of the batteries at destination
2. Description of inner and outer packaging
3. Type of insulating and cushioning material applied
4. Confirmation that batteries are not damaged or defective
5. Confirmation that each battery is individually packed with insulated terminals
6. State of charge (SOC)
7. Photographs of the batteries, packaging, and cushioning material
