Air is Essential, Episode Two – Destination: Billund
Over the past few decades, the air freight industry has experienced significant growth around the world. The rapid expansion of global e-commerce coupled with air freight becoming more cost-effective made for a surge in volumes between 2004 and 2021 – increasing by over 60% from 40.9 million metric tonnes to 65.6 million metric tonnes.
However, throughout 2023, the air freight market has faced widespread uncertainty thanks to weaker economic conditions and reduced consumer demand, while ongoing fuel price fluctuations and capacity constraints have also posed challenges.
Despite this, the world’s dependence on air freight remains high, especially in industries requiring speed, flexibility, and reliability for cross-border shipments of time-sensitive and high-value items.
To address the evolving market dynamics and connect European businesses with the world, Maersk Air Cargo laid the foundation for its future strategy in Europe with the launch of its Billund Hub, Denmark.
In episode two of our ‘Air is Essential’ video series, Alexander Kjaergaard (Air Freight Hub Manager) talks all things Billund and why the location has become the nucleus of Maersk’s air freight operations across Europe and beyond.
