Customer Advisory: Simplifying Demurrage & Detention Invoicing – Effective 7 July 2025
We are making a change to improve your invoicing experience. Starting 7 July 2025, Maersk will discontinue the Demurrage & Detention (DND) periodic invoicing and move to a single invoice based on the actual end of the DND event.
What is periodic invoicing?
Periodic invoicing was introduced in 2023 as a way to bill DND charges at regular intervals, typically every 15 days, until 60 days reached while a container was still incurring charges. While this approach aimed to support timely visibility of costs, we heard from many of you that receiving multiple invoices for the same transaction added complexity and made reconciliation more difficult.
What’s changing?
From 7 July 2025, you will receive one final DND invoice per transaction, issued only after the end event (e.g., container return) is recorded. This means fewer invoices, reduced back-and-forth, and a billing process that is simpler, more transparent, and aligned with how you manage your operations.
Who is affected?
This change applies to DND import shipments in countries where the periodic model was active. There is no change for DND exports, North America (due to regulatory reasons), or customers already on single-invoice models.
We believe this update will lead to a better overall invoicing experience saving you time, reducing manual work, and offering greater clarity.
If you have any questions or need further support, please contact your local Maersk representative. We appreciate your continued partnership and look forward to supporting you through this transition.
