On 3rd November, Maersk communicated that operational constraints at Lyttelton terminal were being closely monitored and assessed for potential impact on vessel scheduling. Our initial contingency plan focused on aligning with the terminal’s anticipated productivity levels whilst seeking to maintain our customers’ business and commitments.
More recent developments at the Lyttelton terminal have introduced operational constraints that are impacting the flow of cargo through the network. These conditions are creating pressure on schedules and capacity, which could affect planned activities if not addressed proactively.
To manage the evolving situation, a congestion surcharge has been implemented as of 1st December 2025 which will be reviewed regularly and will remain in place while the situation persists. Details of the congestion surcharge can be found on the Maersk Notice of 17 November 2025 in the link below. This measure is intended to support our ability to serve customers reliably under current conditions. For now, Maersk will continue to call at Lyttelton as per our current service schedules, and our focus will be to minimise the impact on our customers.
We are in close contact with Lyttelton Port Company and other stakeholders to stay updated and ensure timely communication to our customers. Current indications suggest disruptions at Lyttelton Terminal will continue in the short term, and we will keep customers informed as the situation develops.
Please be advised that recent media reports suggesting changes to Maersk’s future Lyttelton coverage for our JStar and Southern Star services are inaccurate. Any operational adjustments, including equipment repositioning or volume redirection, are currently being implemented solely to mitigate the impact of the current situation and ensure continuity of service for our customers.
