In light of the ongoing disruptions to navigation and port operations in and around the Strait of Hormuz, Maersk continues to focus on ensuring the safety of our vessels, crew, and your cargo. Our priority remains to minimise the impact to your supply chain and provide solutions that mitigate unpredictability and enhance flexibility during this exceptional times.

As part of these efforts and to support customers whose cargo has been diverted to Indian ports of refuge, we are implementing the following temporary solutions.

Detention & Storage Measures for Containers at Indian Ports of Refuge

1. Customers taking delivery in India – containers discharged before 25 March 2026:

  • Containers discharged in India, between 3 March and 25 March 2026;
  • After discharge at an Indian port of refuge, final destination changed for delivery in India.
  • If both assumptions above are valid, Maersk will extend the free time for combined demurrage and detention so as to count from 26 March 2026, rather than the actual date of discharge.

2. Abandonment of Carriage:

  • Containers discharged in India, on or after 26 March 2026;
  • Carriage abandoned and containers placed at customer’s disposal at an Indian port deemed by Maersk safe and convenient
  • No changes to free time allowances. Demurrage and detention rules apply, in line with the standard process.

To maintain clarity and avoid duplicated charges:

  • DIT (storage) charges will continue to apply for as long as the container stays in the terminal,
  • No separate demurrage charges will be levied during this period.

Our teams remain ready to assist you with onward delivery planning, and to support wherever required during this period of disruption.

We appreciate your continued partnership and remain committed to supporting your supply chain with timely and customer focused solutions.
