Diverse Abilities and Neurodiversity

We promote accessibility and inclusive hiring practices that accommodate a range of abilities and cognitive styles. Our approach includes awareness training, workplace accommodations, and support networks that recognise and celebrate different ways of thinking and working. Participation in any programme is voluntary and confidential.

Finding My Purpose and Voice at Maersk

Brian Nichols, a Maintenance Mechanic at Maersk, shares how his personal journey with bipolar disorder and his son's diverse abilities inspired him to become a passionate advocate for inclusion. Through Maersk’s Diverse Abilities and Neurodiversity Employee Resource Network (ERN), he’s helped lead initiatives like “A Day in My Shoes,” using lived experience to foster empathy and drive meaningful change across the company.

We support equality through leadership development, coaching and mentoring. Our initiatives are designed to empower individuals to grow and contribute meaningfully, regardless of gender identity or expression.

LGBTQIA+

We foster a safe and affirming environment for LGBTQIA+ colleagues through inclusive policies, allyship programmes, and visibility efforts. Our goal is to ensure that everyone feels respected, supported, and free to be themselves, without pressure or expectation to disclose personal identity.

Advocacy, allyship and leadership

Richard, a colleague from the Customer Experience team, shares his views:

“I can see that Maersk truly incorporates inclusion into its culture and mindset, and the organisation embraces it at all levels. Two years ago, I shared my coming-out story on Viva Engage, our internal employee communication platform, and my Managing Director was the first to comment, underscoring the importance of DEI to our leadership.”

Working with the embassy model

Regulations covering LGBTQIA+ inclusion vary globally. To protect our employees and contribute to local LGBTQIA+ communities in jurisdictions where the rights of LGBTQIA+ people are not otherwise respected or protected, Maersk adopts an “embassy” model for inclusion.

Internally, the embassy model creates safe, inclusive workplaces for all of our LGBTQIA+ employees. It allows us to enforce our corporate policies for LGBTQIA+ inclusion regardless of local context, and it supports our efforts to promote tolerance and safe spaces for local employees. The ultimate goal is to create an environment in which everyone feels valued and protected, resulting in a productive and secure working environment.
