Culture and Inclusion at A.P. Moller - Maersk
At Maersk, we want to build an organization that reflects the labour market and communities that we serve. We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace culture where everyone is empowered to thrive.
Inclusion means every voice counts...
...across status, sites, shifts, and silos. It’s about creating a culture where different perspectives drive smarter decisions, smoother operations, and shared success. When people feel respected and empowered - everyday excellence follows.
Inclusion in action
Inclusion at Maersk means creating equal opportunities for all and removing barriers - whether visible or invisible. Our approach is grounded in fairness, respect, and the belief that everyone should have the chance to thrive regardless of background, age, gender, race or ability. Our approach to inclusion is driven by the Embassy Model, a way to deliver equal opportunity to different categories.
At Maersk, our culture of inclusion is rooted in psychological safety. We believe that fostering an environment where everyone feels safe to speak up and be themselves is the foundation that empowers our people to thrive. This is how we unlock the full potential of our talent and build a culture of high performance.

In a powerful video, inspiring women at Maersk share the challenges they’ve faced and the assumptions they’ve had to overcome in their professional lives. While there’s still a long way to go, progress is happening, and we’re committed to driving change, fostering inclusion, and empowering women in reaching their full potential every day.

Advocacy, allyship and leadership
Richard, a colleague from the Customer Experience team, shares his views:
“I can see that Maersk truly incorporates inclusion into its culture and mindset, and the organisation embraces it at all levels. Two years ago, I shared my coming-out story on Viva Engage, our internal employee communication platform, and my Managing Director was the first to comment, underscoring the importance of DEI to our leadership.”
Working with the embassy model
Regulations covering LGBTQIA+ inclusion vary globally. To protect our employees and contribute to local LGBTQIA+ communities in jurisdictions where the rights of LGBTQIA+ people are not otherwise respected or protected, Maersk adopts an “embassy” model for inclusion.
Internally, the embassy model creates safe, inclusive workplaces for all of our LGBTQIA+ employees. It allows us to enforce our corporate policies for LGBTQIA+ inclusion regardless of local context, and it supports our efforts to promote tolerance and safe spaces for local employees. The ultimate goal is to create an environment in which everyone feels valued and protected, resulting in a productive and secure working environment.
