From newcomer to team leader: Samantha’s journey to becoming a team leader at Maersk’s Customs Services

Hello, I’m Samantha, I’ve been with Maersk for three years now and am currently a team leader in Maersk Customs Services. In my role, I ensure that Maersk's logistics operations run smoothly and efficiently, particularly in the complex field of customs services. Here’s a look into my career development at Maersk and my journey to becoming a team lead.

My journey into Customs at Maersk

When I decided to join Maersk, I was attracted by the company's reputation as a global leader in logistics and shipping. Maersk is known for its innovation and commitment to sustainable practices, and the prospect of being part of a company that plays a crucial role in global trade was highly appealing to me. The excellent career opportunities and dynamic working environment which would offer me the chance to improve my skills and participate in exciting projects were also significant factors.

I joined Maersk as a customs broker in 2021. Being a customs broker means my primary responsibilities included preparing and filing customs declarations, ensuring the correct classification of goods, and working closely with customs authorities to facilitate smooth import and export processes. Prior to joining Maersk as a customs broker, I didn’t have any experience of working in customs. I had completed an apprenticeship as an office manager at a freight forwarding company, so the Maersk customs role allowed me to gain a deep understanding of customs regulations and procedures and gain hands-on experience in day-to-day customs clearance.

My skill-building journey

Over time, I took on increasing responsibilities, working on more complex cases and larger projects. As I became more knowledgeable and gained expertise within customs, I became a go-to contact for difficult customs issues and was often consulted on challenging customs issues. I also began working on various projects aimed at optimizing processes and increasing efficiency within our team to help enhance our operations.

My growing experience and expertise made me a natural mentor and trainer for new employees. I conducted training sessions and provided guidance to help them navigate the complexities of customs regulations. This mentoring role was incredibly rewarding and helped me grow my leadership skills and also prepared me for future management responsibilities, as I learned to support and develop my colleagues' potential.

My journey to team leadership at Maersk

In 2023, my expertise in customs and support for colleagues was recognized when I was promoted to become a Team Leader for Customs Services at Maersk. I have found leading a customs team at Maersk is challenging but very rewarding. It requires a deep understanding of complex regulations and the ability to guide my team in a constantly changing environment. I focus on setting clear goals, fostering trust and open communication, and balancing operational excellence with supporting each team member’s growth.

My advice to those who want to take on a leadership role or have just become a leader, is to always be open to learning and feedback. Leadership is not only about making decisions, but also about listening and continuously developing. Don't hesitate to take on responsibility and proactively look for opportunities to strengthen both your team and your own skills.

Even though I joined the customs team at Maersk without any prior knowledge or experience of working in customs, Maersk and my colleagues were really supportive in helping me gain the skills I needed on the job.
